Drink Local: Our Wisconsin Beer Picks

This may come as a shock to you, but when I first moved to Wisconsin I didn't like beer. At all. I actually gave my guy friends from college a hard time recently and told them it was all their fault for only drinking crappy, cheap beer throughout our time at Florida State. When I moved to the Midwest I acquired a taste for craft beer. I also learned that all beer was not created equally!

We are so lucky to be surrounded by  amazing breweries, big and small throughout Wisconsin. One of our favorite cheap date nights is to pick up a six pack of assorted beer and do a tasting, splitting each one! We recently were gifted a gorgeous wood beer cap map of Wisconsin and have been inspired to fill it this summer with bottle caps from our favorite local brews. It's going to make the perfect decor piece in our basement when its' finished! They're based out of Madison, which makes it even more special!

Our beer cap map is a "work in progress" so we'll be sure to share it completed too!  Wouldn't it make a fun gift for the beer lover in your life? We wanted to highlight a few of the latest local brews we've tried so far this summer.  We're thankful to have so many of them right in your backyard. So, if you're a Wisconsin local, give these a try. If you're headed here on vacation, be sure to pick up a six-pack to try for yourself

Kyle told me to please disregard his grout-covered hands. I made him be my hand model after a day full of tiling.. what a guy! Also, here is a similar wood craft beer carrier to the one featured!

  • New Glarus Brewing Company Spotted CowYou can't visit Wisconsin without trying a "Spotted Cow" from nearby New Glarus. It's an easy drinking farmhouse ale that isn't sold outside of our lovely state!
  • Leinenkeugel | Summer Shandy - "Leinies" as they're lovingly referred to, are brewed in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. They've made their way across the country, but our favorite is still summer shandy. A lemonade/beer mix that is oh-so-refreshing (the grapefruit shandy is also amazing).
  • Next Door Brewing Company | Kaleidospoke - This brewery is right in our backyard! They're new to the scene but have made quite a splash. We sampled the Kaleidospoke, an American Pale Ale. Kyle loves extra hoppy beers, so this was one of his favorites. It didn't have the bitter finish that a lot of IPA's have.
  • Capital Brewery | Lake House Lager - This summer exclusive beer is brewed just outside of Madison in Middleton. The Lake House is slightly malty and a great summer beer. We're also fans of their year-round Supper Club beer.
  • 3 Sheeps Brewing Company | Nitraberry- This Sheboygan based brewery is filled with unique beer varieties like the "Uber Joe" brewed with Colectivo coffee and the one we sampled, the Nitraberry- a tart wheat brewed with blackberries that's got just a hint of sweetness and is extra tart.
  • One Barrel Brewing Company | Commuter - OBBC is brewed in small batches in Madison. The Commuter is our favorite of their beers! It's a German-style kolsch, unfiltered and a clean finish. True to it's name, it's the perfect stop-by-after-work and grab a pint kind of brew!

For any of our readers who aren't from Wisconsin. Come visit! It's a beautiful state and summer is an amazing time of year. Let us know, we'll join you for a brew! :)
